I hope that you will enjoy reading excerpts, taken from a few chapters of my book, CHOICES, that I will be periodically posting on this site. CHOICES is due to be published in January 2009, but in the meantime, please feel free to browse, leaving communicative comments, sharing your thoughts and views with all who passes by.

Thank you and kind regards,

Elementals

Chapter One

The White Lie

The Arguments for and Against.

“A Little White Lie Does Not Hurt Anyone” and yet, there is the other concept, “The Truth Hurts.” Pondering on these thoughts, the questions posed are, why does the white lie not hurt? Why does the truth hurt? Should it not be the opposite? The white lie hurts and the truth not hurt? Could the hurt, stemming from learning the truth, fall within the realms of coming to terms with the stark reality of “it was not so” and, if this is the case, could this mean that, from posing the white lie, unrealities of life are more readily and easily accepted under the unsuspecting auspices of “it is so,” concealing, covering-up, massaging and distorting, rather than allowing or accepting the truth for what it is? It is what it is.

The white lie, in its distortions and inconvenient conveniences, painlessly steers away, hides, thwarts and protects one from learning the truth. The hurt caused by discovering the truth could stem from learning the opposite of what was believed as being, “it is so.” Still pondering further on these thoughts, let’s take a hypothetical look at the white lie, from its conception, purpose and reasoning.

Why is white the chosen colour of the lie? Why is it not any other colour say, yellow, red or green? A few ideals perceptively used to denote the colour white suggests its purity, cleanliness, holiness and beauty, for example, a white wedding held in a church signifies the purity of the bride and the holy ceremony.

Why is the truth not coloured say, in pink, gold, or blue? Controversially, in a British court of law, standing in the witness box, the one taking the oath states along the lines of, “I solemnly swear to tell the truth, the whole truth and nothing but the truth, so help me, God …,” not the pink, gold or blue truth, but the “whole” truth. And yet, it is a known fact that a number of witnesses, together with the “upholders" of the law, under their practicing skills in the constabulary and the legal system, wheeling and dealing, during their manipulations, hiding, withholding, defending and protecting, lie(s) after having sworn and taken the oath, not all "upholders," I hasten to reiterate.

Could the whole truth, colourless, powerful, crystal clear, without distortion, be construed as whole-some on every occasion and in every situation? Good nourishingly wholesome food for thought? One could argue that the truth hurts once the realisation of what is being thought to be, is not to be, the opposite of what was believed to be, the exposure of a lie, which is no longer to be perceived as the truth. Betrayal. Once we are exposed to the truth in any given situation, after having believed in a number of lies, our awareness, understanding and perceptions of the truth then affords us the blend of clarification with a mixture of confusion, whilst adjusting to the dismissal of the lie, busily coming to terms with administering, registering and arriving at a full understanding of the truth. In the absence of lies, the truth hurts when we are faced with the opposite of what we want, physically and emotionally, and want to believe, hurting acutely when the ideals are close to our hearts.

One could grow accustomed to the habit of telling the odd little beguilingly calculative, protective, white lie, manipulatively, remorsefully or flippantly, for the purpose of achieving a multitude of aims and objectives, and realise or even believe that the white lie is one of a number of effective ways to achieving them. We are “creatures of habit” and ineptly, one, using their own free will, makes the choice to habitually tell white lies, a habit that then possibly adds to one of many of the characteristics making up their personality traits. The white lie could be used as a platform to build upon, culminating into habitually telling lies, all serving their own measure of effects in the interests of impressing, gaining, protecting, disguising, pretending, fearing, hiding, bidding for time, conniving, preventing, envying, convincing, distorting, confusing, conspiring, conning, manipulating, and startlingly, they work, most lies actually achieving the desired results. I can almost hear the liar exclaiming their silent cry of relief on confirmation that the recipient has bought into the lie sold to them. “Phew, got out of that one!”

Imagine that you are the recipient of a lie. You are oblivious to the fact that what you have been told is not true at all, that you’ve been bought with a lie sold to you by an associate, friend, family member or organisation. On learning the truth, be it accidentally, confessed or otherwise, what are your initial thoughts and reactions? How are you personally affected? Have you changed your personal view of the individual, persons or organisation? Are you willing to forgive them?

Copyright by Elementals July 2008

CHOOSE CHOICEST CHOICES

The White Lie ...
